OKC’s golf courses offer plenty of space for current health concerns

Golf has always been a socially distant sport. Apart from the members of one’s playing group, it is rare to come within six feet of another person while on the links.
With people working from home during the day and in search of an activity away from other folks, Oklahoma City-area golf courses have received a significant increase in business over the last couple of months. Comparing May 2019 to May 2020, there was a 35.3% uptick in golf rounds. Looking at last June to this year, there was a 13.3% increase in golf rounds. To date, golf rounds are only up 3.2% because there are fewer people playing in the colder months.
Those folks who normally leave on vacations throughout the summer are instead staying put and spending their free time at the course.
During the increased traffic, Oklahoma City’s courses have implemented a variety of measures to maintain a safe environment. Such precautions include limiting one to two people per golf cart, sanitizing carts after every use, regularly sanitizing clubhouse and restroom areas, and customized touch-free flagsticks. Local golf courses have also limited tee time reservations to scheduling online or over the phone.
Oklahoma has five municipal courses; Earlywine Golf and Country Club, Lake Hefner Golf Club, Lincoln Park Golf Course, Trosper Golf Club and James E. Stewart Golf Course.
Earlywine Golf Club is home to two beautiful 18-hole courses; the South Course and the North Course. Both are in a natural area that features changes in elevations and accented with several water hazards.
Lake Hefner Golf Club offers two 18-hole courses. Both of these beautiful courses have bunkered fairways and water hazards that can challenge even the most-experienced golfer.
Lincoln Park also has two 18-hole courses; East and West. Workers keep both courses beautifully-maintained to tournament conditions and have been a popular destination for the city’s golfers for years.
Trosper Park has earned the reputation of being one of the fastest-playing courses in OKC. It routinely takes less than four hours to complete. With a welcoming staff, an abundantly stocked golf shop and a full-service restaurant, you will enjoy your total golf experience at Trosper.
James E. Stewart Golf course is located just three miles east of downtown OKC at 824 Frederick Douglass Ave. A beautifully maintained nine-hole course, golfers typically take less than 90 minutes to complete a round. Don’t forget to visit their full-service restaurant where breakfast is available all day. Lunch specials are available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting at only $6.99.
A nine-hole walk-up special is available at all courses. The special is available Monday through Friday until the dusk fee begins around 6 p.m.
The Frequent Player and Tour of the City cards offer green fee and cart rentals for those who purchase in advance. With the purchase of eight green fees and cart rentals, you get 10 green fees and cart rentals. Senior and walking versions of this discount are also available.
