OKCMOA invites you to explore the mystical world of Preston Singletary

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA) is gearing up for its upcoming special exhibition, Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight, with an extensive programming schedule. This exhibition, organized by the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Wash. and artist Preston Singletary, will grace the third-floor galleries of the museum from Saturday, Nov. 11, through Sunday, April 28, 2024.

OKCMOA has planned events, tours and classes for the exhibition's opening week to deepen the community's connection to this immersive exhibition. Singletary seamlessly combines traditional glassblowing techniques with Pacific Northwest Indigenous art to honor his ancestral Tlingit heritage, a tribe in southern Alaska. His work pays homage to the rich Tlingit culture, known for pairing objects with ancestral stories and tribal histories. Singletary's art, characterized by glass sculptures, projections and sound, weaves a compelling narrative inspired by Tlingit oral traditions.

The exclusive Sustainers' Preview is on Wednesday, Nov. 8, followed by the Members' Preview Day on Friday, Nov. 10. The latter includes a daytime preview for OKCMOA members and a Members' Preview Celebration featuring entertainment, drinks, light bites and a conversation with the artist and curator.

The museum is also organizing a series of glassblowing workshops, introducing participants to the basics of working with hot glass. These workshops, led by instructor Andrew Boatman at Blue Sage Studios, focus on safety, basic forms and manipulation techniques. Art enthusiasts are invited to join the Drop-In Art session on Nov. 18 and create storytelling journals inspired by Singletary's artistic approach.

Visitors can learn more about the unique artwork during Public Exhibition Tours on Dec. 17 and Feb. 3. The OKCMOA Book Club, scheduled for Jan. 11, will delve into Fusion Notes by Preston Singletary, exploring the artist's life and artistic practices through guided discussions.
