Oklahoma ranks among the nation’s top tailgating destinations

By Chamber Staff / Lifestyle / November 14, 2025

A recent Journal Record article highlighted results from a VegasInsider study on the best states for tailgating, and Oklahoma landed at No. 10, credited for its affordability and passionate fan culture that help create one of the most authentic game day experiences in the country.

In Oklahoma, tailgating isn’t just a pregame ritual, it’s an economic and cultural driver that fuels local businesses, tourism and community pride. On fall Saturdays in Norman and Stillwater, thousands of fans fill hotel rooms, restaurants and retail shops before ever stepping inside the stadium. According to Visit Norman, game days can generate millions in local spending as visitors stock up on food, beverages and supplies, dine at local restaurants and extend their stays through the weekend.

The sports research platform ranked America’s top 10 tailgating destinations for 2025, and Oklahoma landed at No. 10. “Oklahoma’s affordability and passionate fan culture make it one of the most authentic tailgating destinations in America,” the company said. “With the lowest average tailgating cost among the top 10 states and more than 22,000 available parking spaces serving major programs like Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, the state offers a true community-driven game day experience.”

This year’s list favors southern states with strong Southeastern Conference ties. Texas ranked No. 1, followed by South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, California, Mississippi, Colorado, Louisiana and Oklahoma.

Dan Schemm, president of Visit Norman, said he was surprised the University of Oklahoma did not rank higher. Since OU joined the SEC last year, the community has worked to expand fan opportunities. OU opened additional on-campus tailgating areas near the stadium, including new spaces on the North Oval and Boyd Park, next to events in the Historic Campus Corner District. Schemm said visiting fans regularly comment on Norman’s hospitality and how clean and welcoming the city is.

As friendly as OU and Norman might be, Stillwater has long claimed the title of America’s friendliest college town. Nicole Horn, vice president of Visit Stillwater, said the organization has conducted several surveys, and one of the aspects that always stands out is how friendly Stillwater residents are.

Tailgating in Stillwater stretches from Eskimo Joe’s and Midway Tailgate on The Strip to areas around the stadium and across campus. While OSU’s football team has struggled this season with a 1-6 record, fans haven’t lost their enthusiasm.

What started as modest gatherings among friends and family has grown into large-scale, family-friendly events with tents, grills, ice chests, screens and music—showcasing the hospitality, affordability and accessibility that define Oklahoma’s brand. Whether in Norman or Stillwater, tailgating reflects the strong communities and shared pride that makes Oklahoma special.
