Paseo's Magic Lantern children's event begins during Oct. 2 First Friday
Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan has dreamt up a way for children to share their creativity both at home and in the Paseo Arts District in place of their annual Magic Lantern that usually takes place each October. The company’s project, Magic Lantern Fairy “Gazement,” is a hands-on series of events that begins on First Friday, October 2 and ends Monday, November 30.
Children of all ages are invited to StarDanceSwan to share their dazzling word with a performer, and in exchange will receive a curious bag full glittery goods on First Friday, October 2, 6:00-9:00 p.m. and October 3, 12:00-5:00 p.m. Each child creates their own paper puppet and brings their creation back to StarDanceSwan on Friday, October 16 or Saturday, October 17, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The company will create a magical display in the window of the theater using the children’s creations, which will be revealed and illuminated at twilight on Sunday, October 31, and will stay lit for families to view from the sidewalk.
On First Friday, November 6, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. during the “Gazement Ball,” the young and adult dancers of StarDanceSwan will dance in the window to the music of Steve McLinn (Ojas Music) children’s enchanting paper puppet creations. The display will remain up for viewing through Monday, November 30.
Magic Lantern Fairy “Gazement” is made possible through the support of the State Arts Council of Oklahoma, National Endowment for the Arts, the Paseo Arts Association and Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan. For information, call the Paseo Arts Association at 405-525-2688 or go to thepaseo.org.
A Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement’ on Paseo
A window on Paseo is wishing for a fairy tale and the children to make one. Children are invited to come, knock on Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan’s studio door, and with a dazzling word be ready to use imagination for A Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement.’ StarDanceSwan is dreaming of a way for children to share their creativity both at home and in the Paseo Arts District. The company’s project, ‘Gazement,’ is a hands on, creative minds on, hand-made series of events beginning October 2 and ending November 30. In the making of this tale, families peer into StarDanceSwan’s window to see a collection of Paper Puppets jesting a storybook moment. These fanciful characters dangle from pumpkin seed embellishments throughout Autumn evenings while wonder grows inside the children who made them.
This tale begins for children of all ages when their dazzling word is given to StarDanceSwan in exchange for a curious paper bag full of colorful glittery goods. StarDanceSwan is collecting the special words of children on October 2 First Friday, 6:00-9:00 pm, and October 3, 12:00-5:00 pm. Each bag goes home with a child who spins the contents inside until they discover and create a Paper Puppet. Their Paper Puppets come to life, fairies, elves and all kinds of fanciful creatures festooned to appear on stage in StarDanceSwan’s Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement’ window. When children bring their finished puppets to StarDanceSwan on October 16 and 17, 10:00 a.m. -6:00 pm, the ‘Gazement’ window is dark and mysterious. The window must be completed and in the doing of this task, children may capture the sight of wisps sewing flurries of whatnots. Paper Puppets find autumn in the air. Creative spirits await a fusion of imaginations. All Children wait too!
Lights On! Curtains Open! Suddenly on October 31 at twilight a Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement’ appears! The window lights up and we see all of the Paper Puppets in a window
fantasy, like an open page of a storybook. While looking in, all eyes are open, children become inspired by imaginative possibilities. Families can drive to Paseo and gaze into the window from their car, or walk the sidewalk to peer into the fantasy. On First Friday, November 6, 6:00-9:00 pm, the ‘Gazement Ball’ shines further into all stories as the young and adult dancers of StarDanceSwan weave the enchanting Paper Puppets through the original music of Steve McLinn, Ojas. Magic Lantern Fairy ‘Gazement,’ a reminder of the wonder in creative expression, can be seen at twilight until November 30.
Children receive their bags at StarDanceSwan on First Friday, October 2, 6:00- 9:00 pm or October 3, 12:00-5:00pm. Children create Paper Puppets at home from October 3 through October 16. The Paper Puppets come to StarDanceSwan on October 16 or 17 from 10:00 am-6:00 pm. See the window light up on October 31 through November 30.
