Science Museum OK continues to inspire exploration and adventure

By Nate Fisher / Lifestyle / February 15, 2022

Talk to any OKC local that has lived here since at least childhood, and there are a few things that are practically certain: first, they have a favorite Mexican restaurant, and have essentially been raised as an amateur meteorologist. (They probably also are quick to let you know about their favorite TV weatherperson.) But they also undoubtedly have fantastic memories of spending time at Science Museum Oklahoma (Those of us that are of a certain age still have a hard time not calling it The Omniplex). And for good reason!

Science Museum Oklahoma offers all manner of fun, focusing on the scientific and space. The cool thing is, even if you’re a little older and/or without children in tow, SMO is still a blast. While your favorites are still there (The earthquake simulator! The periscope! The [now updated] echo tube! The [now colorful] shadow wall!), the museum is continually bringing in new exhibitions and installations. Get lost in the stars at the Kirkpatrick Planetarium, explore eight different science-themed neighborhoods in CurioCity, get wowed (and perhaps get a little too close to losing your eyebrows) at a Science Live show, and if you’re 21 or older, check out the “Laws of Attraction” event on Friday, Feb. 25. There is also the smART Space galleries, which is a place for art exhibitions cocurated by SMO staff that bring art and science together. “Mind Mirrors: Empathy in Art and Neuroscience,” which focuses on how art relates to empathy and the neurological processes that accompany it, and “Elemental Worlds,” a multimedia interact installation, are two exhibits on offer right now. Get on out to The Omnipl… er.. Science Museum Oklahoma today!
