Start a healthy regimen this year on Family Fitness Month

By Tony Nguyen / Lifestyle / January 2, 2024

The New Year usually begins with the urge for a fresh start. If fitness and exercise is on your resolution list, you’ve come to the right place!

There are many ways to begin a healthier journey for oneself, but how will the new routine be like for a family? January is Family Fitness Month – here are a few ideas, venues and events for families to get fit in Oklahoma City.

Indoor

Oklahoma City has several public gyms to choose from. Big name gyms such as Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness, Four Star Fitness, VASA Fitness and 10GYM are just a few across the metro. All gyms offer a variety of equipment and amenities. If interested, check with the gym of your choice and ask for these details, along with access to personal trainers and group/family rates.

Another option for families is to create a home gym. If you have a spare room or adequate garage space, consider turning the area into a family gym. Simple, inexpensive items to consider include resistance bands, dumbbells, stability balls, yoga mats, step platforms and a pull-up bar. Workouts that incorporate the equipment are readily available online.

Outdoor

Oklahoma City offers five outdoor fitness courts. The benefits of outdoor fitness courts are the wide selection of equipment and activities for guests to try. To assist with your workout at a facility, guests will be encouraged to use a free Fitness Court app to help gauge performance, metrics and other data through a 7-minute, full-body workout program.

Here’s a list of OKC’s outdoor fitness courts:

Scissortail Park Walking Club is for everyone of all ages. Fellow walkers generally meet every Thursday and Sunday of every month from 8-9 a.m. Bring the whole family and meet new people – all while walking at a comfortable pace and catching a scenic view of downtown. Did we forget to mention it’s free to join?

Development and recreational centers

For resources involving fitness and beyond, consider a family membership at any YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City, the new Willa D. Johnson Recreation Center or an Oklahoma City Senior Health & Wellness Center. These facilities will generally offer amenities for various sports, with educational classes to broaden life skills and exploration of the arts. Membership rates for families at these establishments will apply, along with types of activities, programs and schedules.

Family Fitness Month could be a spark to lead towards the longevity of healthy living. It is ideal to start early — establish goals, set milestones and learn how to best motivate one another. When a consensus plan is devised for the family, just remember to have fun together.
