Stay safe and enjoy: Guthrie edition

Once the spring weather that is surely headed our way hits, people will be itching to get outdoors. Many communities in and around OKC have covid-safe activities and fun spots to visit --  perhaps a few common ideas along with some you wouldn’t have thought of.

We did a little digging around and found that Guthrie, which is just a short drive to the north, has some unique things that just might tickle your fancy. From historic ghost tales in the downtown district to disc golf in the park, Guthrie has a lot of ways to spend a safe weekend.

If you are interested in hiking trails, Guthrie’s Liberty Lake has a 7-mile trail for you to explore. You might even see bald eagles (spotted as recently as last month). More: https://www.guthrieok.com/liberty-and-guthrie-lakes

One of Guthrie’s most unique activities you can participate in is the Guthrie Ghost Walk. With such a rich history of being Oklahoma’s first capital, the stories of mysterious happenings, famous outlaws, bad luck, heartbreak and haunted sites make for a great way to spend a night out right. Surrounded by beautiful Victorian architecture, this outing is a list topper: http://www.guthrieghostwalk.com/

While you are downtown, don’t miss the vintage, colorful murals and hand-painted signs. They provide great backdrops for photos and a look into Guthrie’s economic past. More: https://www.guthrieok.com/post/a-self-guided-walking-tour-of-guthrie-hand-painted-signs-murals-and-ghost-signs

When the temps are warmer, add Highland Park’s disc golf course to your list. This 18-hole course is legit and draws a lot of golfers during the summer. Stop by Guthrie’s Ace Hardware for supplies. More: https://www.guthrieok.com/highlandparkdiscgolf

History buffs can enjoy a self-guided walking tour of Guthrie’s historic sites complete with map, audio and video. More: https://www.guthrieok.com/post/let-s-go-for-a-historical-walk-around-guthrie

Bicycle enthusiasts can join Guthrie’s Bike Night on Thursday evenings (weather permitting). Find out more about their weekly rides on Facebook and Instagram: https://www.guthrienewsleader.net/news/guthrie-bike-night-finds-normalcy-amidst-pandemic

Choose one of more of these outings, but no matter what you decide on, Guthrie is always a good time and definitely provides unique ways to social distance in a one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
