Take a drive for fresh views of fall

By Anna Mitchell / Lifestyle / October 3, 2023

As the extreme heat fades away and cooler temperatures are on the horizon, it is the perfect opportunity to grab some friends, take a drive and experience some of the fall foliage around the great state of Oklahoma. TravelOK has put together a great list of the top spots to visit throughout the state to experience the one-of-a-kind fall foliage.

Located in the northern part of the state and a hidden gem to most is Osage Hills State Park near Pawhuska and Bartlesville. As you take a drive through the park, you can hook a line and fish, stay in a cozy cabin with a warm fireplace or view some wildlife. The fall foliage is in full effect with the blackjack oak timber trees and thick forests. While you are in the area, stop by the Woolaroc Ranch, Museum and Wildlife Preserve located near Bartlesville to get a full western experience and see the turn of fall.

Next on the list and known for its free roaming herds of bison, elk and granite mountains is the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge near Lawton. This stop is unique in the way that it offers more than simply magnificent views, as it has rock climbing, learning opportunities to find out more about the history of the area, and the old gold mining town of Meers is close by.

While you are at the refuge, check out their visitor’s center with unique exhibits that give more in-depth detail about the history of the refuge and its ecosystem. If you are hungry, grab a bite to eat at the larger-than-life burgers at the Meers Store restaurant.

One last top spot to visit is Boiling Springs State Park located in Woodward. Boiling Springs State Park is a must-see spot that offers trees with vibrant fall colors and cabins with fireplaces so you can sit outside to enjoy the cooler fall evenings listening to the flow of the North Canadian River. This is the perfect place for anyone looking for a quick weekend getaway.

Anyone who is interested in any of the parks listed above can check out TravelOK.com for the full list of the fall foliage route, an interactive map and more information on any of the parks.
