OKC VeloCity | The Paseo’s First Friday art walk goes virtual

The Paseo’s First Friday art walk goes virtual

By Josh Vaughn / Lifestyle / April 27, 2020

Under normal circumstances, the first Friday of every month is typically when the Paseo comes the most alive. Its cozy restaurants are booked. Its charming studios and galleries are filled to overflowing with visitors. Streets and alleys come alive with music, laughter, and all sorts of creative expression. The First Friday Artwalk happens every month regardless of circumstances...until now. Now, things have changed. A global pandemic hit closer to home than many of us thought it ever would.

While the Paseo is known for quaint architecture, extraordinary restaurants, and its numerous galleries and artist studios, it is much more than that. The Paseo has become the special community that it is because of its people and those who visit it. First Friday is for the people, but because of the safety of those same people, the Paseo must do things differently for the First Friday in May. This Friday, May 1st from 6 to 8 pm, the Paseo Arts District is holding their first-ever First Friday From Home, a streaming Paseo experience. Not only will there be special programing and drop-in visitors, but you will also have the opportunity to financially help those in the Paseo who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Paseo is teaming up with The House Helps to raise money for district personnel who are now unemployed due to the pandemic. The goal is $10,000 and 100% of the proceeds will go to personnel through an application process, similar to a grant. Donations can be made by visiting thehousehelps.org beginning Monday, April 27 through May 8. Paseo merchants are also getting involved by putting items up for sale with half or more of the proceeds going to the fund. Paintings, fashion apparel, jewelry, and gift certificates will be available for purchase and will be posted on the thehousehelps.org website. Follow the Paseo Arts District on all social media, see the Facebook event, and check thepaseo.org for updates about the live stream event.

Alongside supporting those who serve you each First Friday, there will be plenty of opportunities to experience the “Paseo magic” you come to expect each month. There will be a virtual tour meandering through the Paseo making stops along the way. Gallery visits, live music performances, art workshops, and poetry readings are just some of the programming they have planned for you to get your Paseo fix, with proper socially distancing of course.

You can find updates to Paseo merchants by visiting thepaseo.org, including how to order curbside takeout and delivery and where to shop online, and by signing up for their e-newsletter at the bottom of the website.

Oklahoma City’s Unique Arts Destination, the Paseo Arts District is located between NW 27th & 30th Streets, and Walker & Hudson. A wide range of galleries, ten restaurants and a handful of shops round out the Paseo’s distinctive atmosphere.
