Visit Myriad Botanical Gardens in January for a good time

Myriad Botanical Gardens is kicking off the new year with a month full of activities and attractions through its January in the Gardens programming.  

For people looking to meet new wellness goals in the new year, the Gardens will be offering free fitness classes. Myriad in Motion offers free yoga sessions on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m. in the Water Plaza Room. Reservations are not required, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own yoga mats and water. Free tai chi classes will be offered on Jan. 9 and Jan. 23 in the Water Plaza Room, welcoming all skill levels for those aged 16 years or older. 

For the children, the Gardens offers events like Reading Wednesday; Incredible Ice; Winter Garden Potpourri; Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate!; and Every Color Soup! The programs vary from free to $15, bringing a new activity each week of the month. 

For adults, the Gardens will host events such as Hygge from our Rainforest to Home; Our Conservatory in Depth: Fruit; and guided Gardens tours. Workshops on dried floral displays and papercrete planters will also be held. Events vary in date and price, with members receiving a discounted rate for each. 

On Jan. 10, you can skate with the University of Oklahoma Sooners hockey team. The team will join guests from 5 to 6 p.m. to skate, take pictures and give autographs at the Devon Ice Rink. 

The ice rink will continue its winter season through Jan. 29. The 5,500-square-foot wonderland is open Monday through Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m., Friday from 3 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

The Gardens will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Park House and Visitor Lobby. Community leaders, the Society of Urban Poets and more will gather in honor of Dr. King’s legacy. The family-friendly event will include read-aloud segments, crafts for kids, an oral presentation of history and more. 

On Jan. 21, a Lunar New Year Celebration will be held at the Water Stage, Visitor Lobby and West Plaza from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include performances by the Hung Viet Lion Dancers, Golden Tiger martial arts studio and RACE Dance Collective. Samurai sword and calligraphy lessons, face painting and more will be included in the events.
