Winter Training Routes in OKC

By Chamber Staff / Lifestyle / December 17, 2025

Winter training is officially underway as runners begin preparing for spring marathons and race season. Whether you are building base mileage, mixing up your routes or visiting Oklahoma City and looking for scenic places to jog, the metro offers plenty of variety for every type of runner.

Paved Trails

  • Lake Hefner Trail
A 9.6-mile paved loop surrounding the lake, complete with wide-open views, sailboats, parks and a handful of restaurants where you can grab a post-run bite. Sunrise and sunset runs here are especially stunning.
  • Oklahoma River Trail
Stretching 13 miles along the North Canadian River, this flat and well-maintained trail is great for long runs, tempo workouts or steady mileage. The path starts near downtown and winds west, offering skyline views and peaceful riverside stretches.

Other Local Favorites

  • Katy Trail
Approximately 6.6 miles, this quieter trail is ideal for runners who prefer a more low-key, tree-lined route.
  • Downtown OKC
The city’s walkable core offers a unique mix of urban scenery, historic buildings and easy access to destinations like Bricktown, Automobile Alley and Scissortail Park.
  • Scissortail Park
A classic choice for both locals and visitors. With open lawns, water features, and interconnected paths, it is perfect for a casual jog, interval session, or weekend shakeout.

For those adding hills or speedwork into their winter training, Historic Heritage Hills provides a great challenge with rolling streets, beautiful historic homes and enough elevation change to keep your legs working.
