Does your business need a reboot: 7 smart rebranding tips to regain your reputation

When you run a small business, you live and die by your reputation. Whether it is fair or not, the way your business is perceived quickly becomes reality. If your reputation is damaged, the value of your small business could quickly plummet, and in extreme cases, a complete rebranding may be necessary to set things right.

Building a solid brand is no easy task, and rebranding an existing business can be even harder. Hopefully, your business will never need a reboot, but if the worst does happen, here are seven smart rebranding tips you will want to know about.

  1. Get to know your audience. Knowing who you are speaking to will be key to any successful rebranding, so take steps to learn about your targeted customers and what they want. The more you know, the better and more successful you will be.
  2. Pull back your online presence. If you want to make a clean break and get a new start, you will need to pull back your online presence. Taking the company website offline and closing social media accounts will help you create the clean slate you are looking for.
  3. Think about new names for your company. Once the rebranding plan is complete, you will introduce your new company to the world, so think about what that firm should be called. A clever name alone is not enough, but the right name can boost the effectiveness of your rebranding strategy.
  4. Review past mistakes to make future missteps less likely. If you repeat the mistakes that made the rebrand necessary you could find yourself in an endless loop of new names and fresh launches. In order for your rebranding to be successful you must first own up to what went wrong.
  5. Search for the right slogan. You will want to reintroduce your rebranded company to the world, and that means coming up with a killer slogan. Think about what you want the business to represent and use that to craft the perfect slogan.
  6. Write your mission statement. Having a mission statement will be critical to the success of your rebranding efforts, so think about what your business is all about and what the company stands for.
  7. Plan for your relaunch. When your small business was first getting started you thought long and hard about how the grand opening would go. Your rebranding efforts deserve the same care and planning, so think about how and when your newly rebranded business will be introduced to the waiting world.

Hopefully, your business will never require a complete reboot. If you are lucky, blows to your reputation will require nothing more than a sincere apology and a slight change in direction. Even so, it is important to know about rebranding - you never know when that hard reboot will be necessary.
