MassMutual Oklahoma's deep roots propel it into its next 100+ years

In the early days of Oklahoma City’s founding era, some folks saw insurance as a vital need. The MassMutual Oklahoma office begin in 1902, five years before Oklahoma became a state. Our booming midwestern town was a nice fit for an east-Coast based company, founded in 1851, whose first president was a former local sheriff. George Rice of Springfield, Massachusetts was encouraged by his cousin, an insurance agent in Connecticut, to start a mutual company. He left law enforcement and entered the world of insurance.

In its 120 years of doing business in the metro, MassMutual Oklahoma has had just five CEOs in that span, a nod to the stability of this firm. “I like to visualize our early founders working out of a covered wagon near the Oklahoma River,” said Jolene Curry, Director of Advisor Experience with the Agency. “I can’t help but wonder what the medical exams might have looked like in those days.”

Now more than ever, families and business are looking to an experienced financial professional to guide them along their financial path, and MassMutual Oklahoma remains a strong community partner. Most successful financial professionals tend to be those who are active in non-profits, community organizations and business associations.

After years of officing on the outskirts of the city, in 2017, MassMutual Oklahoma built a new, modern office in the heart of the then-burgeoning Midtown area. When the new office opened, it was hard to find a restaurant in walking distance that was open for Monday lunches. Now the hard part is making a choice of where one would like to dine, thanks to all the growth in the Midtown area.

“We built our new space to be unlike any financial services office around,” stated current CEO, Mark Burson. With clean, modern conference rooms, which are all wired for virtual meetings, the building looks more like a tech start up than a stuffy financial office.

The firm realizes that the next generation of consumers will enjoy doing business a different way, but their needs are still the same. “We have made some huge leaps in technology recently that are game-changing in our industry,” stated Burson, “We want to educate our clients and also empower them to be as involved as they want in their future planning.”

As part of their commitment to education and community, MassMutual Oklahoma dedicated the top floor of their building at 13th and Walker to an event space, Walker Terrace. From agency events, to financial education and even weddings, thousands have passed through this beautiful space which overlooks Midtown.

MassMutual Oklahoma is grateful for the 100-plus years here, and looks forward to the next one hundred.
