Shellback General Contracting prepares for new headquarters in 2025

By Chamber Staff / Member News / January 6, 2025

In the competitive world of commercial construction, Shellback General Contracting stands out not only for its impressive portfolio but for its unwavering commitment to people. Headquartered in Oklahoma City, the company draws its name from the naval term "Shellback" – a title honoring sailors whose grit and skill led them across the equator. This spirit is evident in Shellback’s operations, where resilience, integrity and camaraderie guide their approach to every project and partnership.

The firm’s founder, Matt Richardson, embodies this ethos. After serving as a Rescue Swimmer in the U.S. Navy, Richardson returned to Oklahoma with a drive to contribute to his state’s development. He began his career in commercial construction by founding Viking Construction in 2008, specializing in millwork on high-profile projects like the Devon Tower. Recognizing the demand for a more comprehensive contracting approach, he partnered with his wife, Carly, to launch Shellback General Contracting in 2013. Since then, Shellback has grown from a promising startup into a trusted name in construction, committed to handling projects with a people-first philosophy that permeates every level of the company.

Shellback’s values are simple and founded on personal connections and integrity. “Our culture encourages productivity through teamwork and trust, with a strong ‘family first’ approach,” Richardson explains. “Together, we’ve built a place that people enjoy coming to work, project teams that clients request time and again and processes that allow us to learn from each other and share victories.”

By fostering this people-centered culture, Shellback attracts top-tier talent and a reputable customer base, ensuring every project is staffed by dedicated team members who align with the client's needs and company’s high standards. Jobs range from $100,000 to over $20 million in industries spanning healthcare, education, aviation, restaurants, oil and gas and beyond – and with the majority of business being at the request of repeat clients or referrals, they’ve proven this model yields long-lasting benefits.

Shellback’s commitment to growth extends beyond its projects and into its own future. The company recently purchased a building on the historic Classen Circle with plans to renovate and relocate their headquarters there in 2025. “Our whole team is really excited for this move,” says Richardson. “It represents a new chapter for Shellback and reaffirms our dedication to being a part of Oklahoma City’s continued growth.”

Over the years, Shellback’s dedication to integrity and consistency has earned them a reputation as a firm that approaches each challenge with a steadfast commitment to “doing things the right way.” For Shellback General Contracting, success is measured by the strength of its relationships and the trust of its clients – a foundation as solid as the buildings they construct.
