Tips to help entrepreneurs maintain a work-life balance

By Chamber Staff / PRESENTED BY Business University / Member News / June 22, 2022

Maintaining a work-life balance is critical to entrepreneurs. Without a conscious effort to have a world beyond the business, the constant needs of the venture can make it easy to ruin relationships and other interests. That lack of balance can quickly result in burnout and other emotional issues. Fortunately, there is much you can do to keep that from happening. Here are 5 tips that will help you maintain that balance and your sanity:

Minimize Distractions When at Work

When you are at work, everything should be focused on getting your entrepreneurial tasks done. That means minimizing distractions that aren't related to work, such as friends and family. The challenge you face is making sure the people in your life know that those are your busy times and thus you may not be able to reply immediately. Making sure they know about those hours can minimize hurt feelings and issues. Let them know, either by posting on group or having an auto-reply message set-up.

Embrace Schedules and To-Do Lists

The greatest enemy you face when it comes to a work-life balance is time. The worse you manage that resource, the more difficult it will be to balance your life and your office hours. Fortunately, using schedules and to-do lists can alleviate much of the pressure. Not only will you not miss out on any important tasks, they will allow you to block off specific hours so you can focus entirely on friends, family, and yourself.

Make Relaxation a Priority

You will do your startup no favors if you burnout, which exactly what will happen if you don't take a break every now and then. While there will be times when you will need to pull all-nighters, those should be exception rather than the rule. Make relaxation a priority in your schedule. Even small five-minute breaks are better than nothing, and those breaks will help you keep your mind sharp and ready.

Take Care of Your Body

Your mental health can be at the whim of your physical state. If you are out of shape, or constantly tired, you will find it difficult to focus on your tasks or to think of new ideas. The good news is you don't need to become a body builder or run triathlons. You just need to dedicate some of your time to taking care of yourself. Go for a walk daily, or sign-up for a gym, or buy some weights to use at the office or at home. The more you care for yourself physically, the stronger you will tend to be mentally.

Delegate What You Can

The best way to help you develop a healthy work-life balance is to delegate as much as you can. There is a lot to be done when working on a startup, and taking on all those responsibilities yourself can quickly take up all your time. Instead, hire some help and delegate tasks you do not need to handle personally. Don't just find help at the office either - find help for your personal responsibilities as well.  For example, if you do not have time to cook healthy meals, sign-up for a meal delivery service.

Balancing your personal and work life is difficult, but if you want to survive being an entrepreneur that is what you need to do. You have a life outside the startup. Do not sacrifice it just to make a successful business.
