UCO receives $154,000 Arnall Family Foundation grant to foster student success

The University of Central Oklahoma Foundation and the UCO Center for Counseling and Well-Being recently received a $154,000 grant from the Arnall Family Foundation to assist with efforts to reverse the trend of foster care youth failing to complete a college education.

The Fostering Student Success initiative facilitates a full‐time case manager position on campus to support Central students, formerly in foster care, in their efforts to attain a college degree. The case manager will serve as an advocate, social and clinical resources expert, and mentor for these students.

“The Arnall Family Foundation is pleased to support the Fostering Student Success program at UCO in their quest to provide additional services and support to foster alumni,” said Arnall Family Foundation President Sue Ann Arnall.

“We believe this program will make a lasting impact on the retention and graduation rates of these students.”

“Students who have experienced foster care have already demonstrated tremendous resilience. They arrive ready for the next steps in their collegiate journey, but sometimes encounter gaps from their experiences that may create barriers for their success,” said Julia Reed, senior director of the UCO Center for Counseling and Well-Being and Fostering Student Success coordinator.

“Through the support from the Arnall Family Foundation, the Fostering Student Success initiative at UCO has the opportunity to engage our campus and community partners in breaking down barriers for former foster youth. We look forward to connecting with students emerging from foster care so that they can create a home at UCO and a pathway to graduation.”

This program will serve new students, as well as Central’s current population of more than 150 students, who were previously in foster care. Fostering Student Success also hopes to provide a blueprint for similar programs at other universities.
